The Rhine–Main–Danube Canal, also known as the Main-Danube Canal, RMD Canal, or Europa Canal, is a canal located in Bavaria, Germany. This canal connects the Main and Danube rivers across the European Watershed, spanning from Bamberg to Nuremberg and finally reaching Kelheim. Its primary purpose is to provide a navigable artery between the Rhine delta in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and the Danube Delta in southeastern Romania and southwestern Ukraine (or Constan?a, via the Danube–Black Sea Canal). The canal, completed in 1992, boasts a length of 171 kilometers (106 miles).
The idea of connecting the Danube and Rhine basins by canal has a long history. In 793, Emperor Charlemagne ordered the construction of the Fossa Carolina, also known as the Karlsgraben, a canal connecting the Swabian Rezat, a tributary of the Rednitz, to the Altmühl near Treuchtlingen. Between 1836 and 1846, the Ludwig Canal, named after King Ludwig I of Bavaria, was built between Bamberg and Kelheim. However, this canal faced challenges, including a narrow channel, numerous locks, and water shortages in the peak section. These factors made the operation of the waterway uneconomical, especially considering the rapid expansion of the railway network in southern Germany. Ultimately, the Ludwig Canal was abandoned in 1950 due to a decision not to repair damage sustained during World War II.
In 1917, the Landtag of Bavaria enacted a law that mandated the development of a significant shipping route connecting Aschaffenburg and Passau. This route was designed to accommodate the 1,200-ton ships that operated on the Rhine River. On June 13, 1921, Bavaria and the German Reich reached an agreement to construct the “Main-Donau-Wasserstraße.” This plan involved the expansion of the Main and Danube rivers, as well as the creation of a completely new channel connecting them. To finance the waterway project, the Rhein-Main-Donau AG (RMD-AG) was established on December 30, 1921. The RMD was granted control of the water resources of the Main, Danube, Lech, Altmühl, and Regnitz rivers to secure the necessary funding for the endeavor.
A bond is a document of title for a loan. Bonds are issued, not only by businesses, but also by national, state or city governments, or other public bodies, or sometimes by individuals. Bonds are a loan to the company or other body. They are normally repayable within a stated period of time. Bonds earn interest at a fixed rate, which must usually be paid by the undertaking regardless of its financial results. A bondholder is a creditor of the undertaking.
