Pink Specimen Stock printed by Security Banknote Company. 20th Century Studios, Inc., commonly referred to as 20th Century, is an American film studio that is currently a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Studios, which is part of Disney Entertainment, itself a division of The Walt Disney Company. The studio's headquarters are located at the Fox Studio Lot in the Century City area of Los Angeles. Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures is responsible for the distribution and marketing of films produced by 20th Century Studios in theatrical markets. For more than 80 years, 20th Century has been recognized as one of the leading American film studios. Established in 1935 as Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation through the merger of Fox Film and Twentieth Century Pictures, it was one of the original "Big Five" studios during Hollywood's Golden Age. In 1985, following its acquisition by Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation, the studio dropped the hyphen from its name, becoming Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation. This entity was rebranded as 21st Century Fox in 2013 after divesting its publishing assets. On March 20, 2019, Disney acquired the majority of 21st Century Fox's assets, including 20th Century Fox. The studio officially adopted its current name as a trade name on January 17, 2020, to prevent confusion with Fox Corporation, and began using it for copyright purposes related to 20th Century and Searchlight Pictures productions on December 4. Notable film franchises produced by 20th Century Studios include the original six Star Wars films, X-Men, Ice Age, Avatar, and Planet of the Apes, along with several television series such as The Simpsons. The studio's film archive also features acclaimed individual films, including Titanic, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture and held the title of the highest-grossing film for over a decade, and The Sound of Music, which garnered five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.
