Longwood University, located in Farmville, Virginia, is a public institution established in 1839 as the Farmville Female Seminary. Commonly referred to as Longwood or Longwood College, it ranks as the third-oldest public university in Virginia and is among the top one hundred oldest higher education institutions in the United States. Originally a female seminary, it transitioned to a coeducational model in 1976 and achieved university status on July 1, 2002. The institution underwent several name changes throughout its history, including State Female Normal School (1884), State Normal School for Women (1914), and State Teachers College (1924). Under the leadership of Jarman, the college evolved into one of Virginia's most esteemed teacher preparation colleges. Notably, during Jarman's presidency, the college acquired the Longwood House estate in 1928, which later inspired the university's name.
