Red Bell Brewing Co. announced that its CEO James Bell has resigned and it has been shut down by the state. In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Red Bell disclosed that, effective Jan. 1, its brewery license was not renewed. Red Bell owes the state $80,000 in taxes and did not obtain the necessary tax-clearance certificates that would have allowed it to continue operations. The brewery has not been able to sell or brew beer since Jan. 1. Red Bell also disclosed that, effective Jan. 10, James R. Bell resigned as CEO, president and chairman of the board of directors. He is no longer an officer or an employee of the company. Martin F. Spellman was named to replace him as chairman. In the filing, the company said it intends to obtain the tax clearances it needs to operate.
