It operates one of the world's largest clinical laboratory networks, which includes 36 primary laboratories across the United States. The company was formerly known as Roche BioMedical until its merger with National Health Laboratory in 1995. Labcorp's largest volume of specialty testing is conducted at its Center for Esoteric Testing in Burlington, where the company's headquarters are located. As of 2018, Labcorp processes approximately 2.5 million lab tests each week.

Labcorp was an early leader in genomic testing, utilizing polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology at its Center for Molecular Biology and Pathology in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. The company is also involved in other molecular diagnostics, including oncology testing and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) genotyping and phenotyping.
