Trenton, the capital of New Jersey and the seat of Mercer County, holds a deep place in the nation’s founding history. Nestled along the Delaware River, it is renowned for General George Washington’s pivotal crossing and subsequent victory over Hessian troops in 1776, a pivotal moment in the American Revolution. Visitors can immerse themselves in this heritage at the Old Barracks Museum, the last remaining colonial barracks in the state, or explore the New Jersey State House, the third-oldest state capitol in continuous use in the nation.

Beyond its political and revolutionary significance, Trenton once thrived as a global industrial powerhouse, epitomized by the slogan “Trenton Makes, the World Takes.” During the 19th and early 20th centuries, the city excelled in manufacturing steel, rubber, and world-class ceramics. The Trenton City Museum at Ellarslie Mansion now proudly showcases much of this cultural and artistic heritage.

While the decline of heavy industry in the late 20th century posed economic challenges, modern Trenton has emerged as a vibrant city characterized by its rich cultural diversity and ongoing revitalization efforts. The city remains a central transportation hub, uniquely served by three different rail systems—Amtrak, NJ Transit, and SEPTA—facilitating easy access between Philadelphia and New York City.
