Specimen Stock printed by American Bank Note Company. Shawmut Bank was founded in Boston in 1836, and its emblem, featuring the stylized bust of Sachem Obbatinewat, became a prominent symbol in Greater Boston over the following 150 years. In 1988, Shawmut Corporation, the bank's parent company, merged with Hartford National Corporation, which owned Connecticut National Bank and the Provident Institution for Savings, to create Shawmut National Corporation.
