Specimen Stock printed by American Bank Note Company. E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company, widely recognized as DuPont, is an American corporation that was established in July 1802 in Wilmington, Delaware, by the French-American chemist and industrialist Éleuthère Irénée du Pont. Originally founded as a gunpowder manufacturing facility, DuPont rapidly expanded its operations to become a significant entity in the chemical sector. By the mid-19th century, it had emerged as the largest supplier of gunpowder in the United States, providing a substantial amount of the Union Army's munitions during the American Civil War. The original location, Eleutherian Mills, has since been transformed into a museum and designated as a National Historic Landmark.
In the 20th century, DuPont broadened its scope and gained recognition for the creation of various synthetic materials, including neoprene, nylon, Teflon, Kevlar, Nomex, and Lycra, among others. These advancements significantly impacted multiple industries, ranging from textiles to aerospace. Additionally, DuPont was responsible for the introduction of Freon, a common refrigerant, and the development of a variety of synthetic pigments and paints, such as ChromaFlair. By 2014, DuPont ranked as the fourth-largest chemical company globally in terms of market capitalization and the eighth-largest by revenue. On August 31, 2017, DuPont merged with Dow Chemical Company, forming the conglomerate DowDuPont, which subsequently split into three independent companies, each concentrating on agriculture, materials science, and specialty products.
Stock and Bond Specimens are made and usually retained by a printer as a record of the contract with a client, generally with manuscript contract notes such as the quantity printed. Specimens are sometimes produced for use by the printing company's sales team as examples of the firm’s products. These are usually marked "Specimen" and have no serial numbers.
