The Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (FHLMC), commonly referred to as Freddie Mac, is a publicly traded government-sponsored enterprise (GSE) located in Tysons Corner, Virginia. In the 2018 Fortune 500 list of the largest corporations in the United States by total revenue, Freddie Mac holds the 38th position. Established in 1970, the FHLMC was designed to enhance the secondary market for mortgages within the United States. Together with the Federal National Mortgage Association (Fannie Mae), Freddie Mac purchases mortgages from the secondary market, consolidates them, and subsequently sells them as mortgage-backed securities to investors in the open market. This secondary mortgage market serves to augment the availability of funds for mortgage lending and facilitates increased financial resources for new home acquisitions. The designation "Freddie Mac" is a derivative of the initialism of the corporation's complete name, which was officially adopted for the sake of convenience in identification. On September 7, 2008, James B. Lockhart III, the director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), declared that both Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac had been placed under the conservatorship of the FHFA (refer to the Federal takeover of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac). This measure has been characterized as "one of the most extensive government interventions in private financial markets in decades."
