The Bank of London, Mexico, and South America was the inaugural foreign bank established in Mexico. It was a branch of the English bank, The London Bank of Mexico and South America, Ltd., with a capital of two and a half million pesos. The bank commenced operations on August 1, 1864, during the reign of Emperor Maximilian of Austria and the presidency of Benito Juárez. Its headquarters were located on Capuchinas Street corner with Lerdo in Mexico City.
Don William Newbold, the founder and initial manager of the Bank of London and Mexico, arrived in Mexico alongside Robert Geddes with the intention of establishing a branch in the country. Newbold successfully negotiated favorable conditions for their settlement, securing the exclusive right to operate as the sole foreign bank in Mexico.
Recognizing the importance of fostering a national character for the bank’s operations, its staff embarked on an extensive network of agencies across the country, which later evolved into branches. These branches soon expanded to include locations in Cuba, such as Havana, and Victoria, the capital of British Columbia.
A bond is a document of title for a loan. Bonds are issued, not only by businesses, but also by national, state or city governments, or other public bodies, or sometimes by individuals. Bonds are a loan to the company or other body. They are normally repayable within a stated period of time. Bonds earn interest at a fixed rate, which must usually be paid by the undertaking regardless of its financial results. A bondholder is a creditor of the undertaking.
