Wawona Hotel Co. - 1900's dated Unissued Hotel Stock Certificate

It was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1987 and is included in the National Register of Historic Places. The Wawona Hotel ranks among the oldest mountain resort hotels in California and exemplifies the classic design of the Victorian era. Constructed in 1876, the Victorian-style hotel was intended to accommodate tourists visiting the nearby Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias (Sequoiadendron giganteum). As tourism flourished, the hotel expanded its accommodations and facilities until 1916. Furthermore, it developed additional forest trails and paths along the south fork of the Merced River. The hotel is prominently featured in the 1964 World War II thriller 36 Hours, starring James Garner and Eva Marie Saint, where it is depicted as a U.S. military hospital located in Waldshut, Germany. On March 1, 2016, the Wawona Hotel was renamed Big Trees Lodge following a legal dispute involving the U.S. government, which owns the property, along with the new concessionaire, Aramark, and the previous concessionaire, Delaware North, which asserted rights to the trademarked name. The hotel restored its historic name on July 15, 2019, after a settlement was achieved in the dispute.
