Cracker Jack is a well-known American snack food brand that features molasses-flavored, caramel-coated popcorn and peanuts, famously packaged with a small prize of minimal value inside. The Cracker Jack name and its slogan, "The More You Eat The More You Want", were officially registered in 1896. Some food historians regard it as the first junk food. Cracker Jack is particularly renowned for its association with baseball history. Since 1997, the Cracker Jack brand has been owned and marketed by Frito-Lay. In 2016, Frito-Lay announced that the traditional toy gift would be discontinued and replaced with a QR code that allows users to download a baseball-themed game. The exact origin of sugar-coated popcorn mixed with peanuts remains unclear, but historical records indicate its production and sale in North America dating back to the early 19th century. For instance, the Freeport, Illinois Daily Journal published an advertisement on January 29, 1857, from a local merchant offering sugar-coated popcorn.
In Chicago, there are two popular legends regarding the origins of Cracker Jack: one attributes its creation to Charles Frederick Gunther (1837–1920), known as "The Candy Man" and "Cracker-Jacks King"; the other credits Frederick William Rueckheim, a German immigrant informally referred to as "Fritz", who began selling popcorn at 113 Fourth Avenue (now Federal Street) in Chicago in 1871. The popcorn produced by Rueckheim was handmade using steam equipment. In 1873, Fritz acquired his partner William Brinkmeyer’s share and invited his brother, Louis, from Germany to join his business, establishing the company F. W. Rueckheim & Bro. The Rueckheim brothers developed a new recipe that combined popcorn, peanuts, and molasses, which they first showcased to the public at the World's Columbian Exposition (Chicago's inaugural World's Fair) in 1893. However, the molasses in this initial version was excessively sticky.
In 1896, Louis developed a technique to isolate the kernels of molasses-coated popcorn throughout the production process. As each batch was blended in a drum resembling a cement mixer, a small amount of oil was incorporated—a well-kept trade secret. Prior to this modification, the mixture had proven challenging to manage, as it tended to clump together.
A stock certificate is issued by businesses, usually companies. A stock is part of the permanent finance of a business. Normally, they are never repaid, and the investor can recover his/her money only by selling to another investor. Most stocks, or also called shares, earn dividends, at the business's discretion, depending on how well it has traded. A stockholder or shareholder is a part-owner of the business that issued the stock certificates.
