Thomas Nast (1840-1902), Cartoonist. Staff artist on Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper and Harper's Weekly. His Civil War period cartoons were vastly influential and made him, in Abraham Lincoln's words, "our best recruiting sergeant." He attacked the "Tweed Ring," (1869-72) and defended Hayes against Tilden. He invented the Democratic donkey and Republican elephant (1874). Great 1890's check with an uncanceled signature of Nast.
