John Pierpont Morgan Sr. (April 17, 1837 – March 31, 1913) was an American financier and investment banker who held a dominant position in corporate finance on Wall Street during the Gilded Age. As the head of the banking firm that eventually became J.P. Morgan and Co., he played a pivotal role in the wave of industrial consolidation that swept across the United States during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
William James Pirrie, 1st Viscount Pirrie, KP, PC, PC (Ire) (May 31, 1847 – June 7, 1924) was a prominent British shipbuilder and businessman. He served as the chairman of Harland and Wolff, a renowned shipbuilding company, from 1895 until his death in 1924. Additionally, he held the position of Lord Mayor of Belfast from 1896 to 1898. In recognition of his contributions, he was ennobled as Baron Pirrie in 1906, appointed a Knight of the Order of St Patrick in 1908, and elevated to the rank of Viscount Pirrie in 1921. Prior to the tragic sinking of the Titanic in 1912, Lord Pirrie faced scrutiny regarding the number of lifeboats on the Olympic-class ships. He confidently asserted that these magnificent vessels were unsinkable, and the rafts were intended to rescue passengers in case of an emergency. This statement would later haunt him deeply. On other fronts, Lord Pirrie was already a contentious figure in Belfast. As a Protestant employer, he was associated with the Liberal Party and advocated for the policy of Home Rule for Ireland.
Joseph Bruce Ismay (December 12, 1862 – October 17, 1937) was an English businessman who served as the chairman and managing director of the White Star Line. In 1912, he gained international attention as the highest-ranking White Star official to survive the sinking of the company’s new flagship, the RMS Titanic. This incident led to severe criticism of him.
Peter Arrell Browne Widener (November 13, 1834 – November 6, 1915) was an American businessman, art collector, and the patriarch of the Widener family in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Widener was ranked 29th on the American Heritage list of the forty richest Americans in history. At the time of his death in 1915, his net worth was estimated to be between $23 billion and $25 billion (in 1998 dollars).
Charles Steele (May 5, 1858 – August 5, 1939) was an American lawyer and philanthropist. He was a member of J.P. Morgan & Co. for 39 years.
The International Mercantile Marine Company, initially known as the International Navigation Company, was established in the early 20th century as a strategic move by J.P. Morgan to dominate the shipping industry. IMM was founded by prominent shipping magnates, including Clement Griscom of the American Line and Red Star Line, Bernard N. Baker of the Atlantic Transport Line, J. Bruce Ismay of the White Star Line, and John Ellerman of the Leyland Line. Notably, the Dominion Line was also incorporated into the company. The project received substantial financial backing from J.P. Morgan & Co., led by the renowned financier J.P. Morgan. Additionally, IMM established mutually beneficial profit-sharing relationships with the German Hamburg-Amerika and North German Lloyd lines. This trust raised significant concerns within the British shipping industry, ultimately leading to the British government providing financial support to the Cunard Line’s new ships, the RMS Lusitania and RMS Mauretania, in an attempt to counter the growing influence of IMM.
A stock certificate is issued by businesses, usually companies. A stock is part of the permanent finance of a business. Normally, they are never repaid, and the investor can recover his/her money only by selling to another investor. Most stocks, or also called shares, earn dividends, at the business's discretion, depending on how well it has traded. A stockholder or shareholder is a part-owner of the business that issued the stock certificates.
