August Belmont (1813–1890), a German-born American financier, diplomat, and prominent political leader, emerged as a defining figure of America’s Gilded Age. Born into a Jewish family in Alzey, Germany, he embarked on his career at the tender age of 14 as an apprentice for the Rothschild banking house in Frankfurt. In 1837, during his journey to Cuba to oversee Rothschild interests, he found himself in New York City amidst the severe economic depression known as the Panic of 1837. Seizing the opportunity, he established his own private firm, August Belmont & Company, which became the exclusive U.S. agent for the Rothschilds. His swift financial success propelled him into the elite circles of New York society, a status further solidified by his marriage to Caroline Slidell Perry, the daughter of Commodore Matthew C. Perry, in 1849.

Beyond his financial endeavors, Belmont wielded significant influence in national politics as a Democrat. He served as the U.S. minister to the Netherlands from 1855 to 1857 and chaired the Democratic National Committee from 1860 to 1872. As a staunch Union supporter during the Civil War, he skillfully utilized his European connections to obstruct funding for the Confederacy. Belmont’s philanthropic spirit and passion for sports were evident in his role as the first president of the Academy of Music and his sponsorship of the inaugural Belmont Stakes in 1867, a prestigious thoroughbred race that continues to bear his name. His extravagant lifestyle on Fifth Avenue became an inspiration for the character of Julius Beaufort in Edith Wharton’s renowned novel, The Age of Innocence.
