Inv# CF1113 Paper Money$2. Richmond, Virginia. 2nd Series D. T-61 CR-471. Confederate Treasury Notes (banknotes) were eventually issued in denominations of 50¢, $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50, $100, $500, and $1,000, featuring a range of designs, issuers, and redeemable obligations. The total amount of currency released under the various acts of the Confederate Congress reached $1.7 billion. Bills were issued in 72 distinct note "types" across seven "series" from 1861 to 1864. Due to the numerous types of Confederate notes, along with those issued by the states within the Confederacy, and the ability of banks to produce their own notes, counterfeiting posed a significant challenge for the Confederacy. Many of these contemporary counterfeits can be recognized today and may hold equal value to collectors as authentic notes. Confederate dollars and coins continue to be the focus of an active market, with meticulous grading of wear and deterioration akin to the grading practices of booksellers.
