ABCorp is an American corporation specializing in contract manufacturing and related services for the authentication, payment, and secure access sectors. The company traces its origins back to 1795, beginning as a secure engraver and printer that played a key role in producing more counterfeit-resistant currency for the First Bank of the United States. ABCorp has facilities across the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, and its subsidiary, the American Bank Note Company (ABN), continues its legacy in high-security engraving and printing.

The origins of the American Bank Note Company date back to when Robert Scot, the first official engraver of the U.S. Mint, started the company that eventually grew into ABN. It was founded as Murray, Draper, Fairman & Company in 1795, named after Scot’s three partners. As the U.S. population grew and financial institutions proliferated, the company expanded its offerings, including stock and bond certificates, paper currency for state-chartered banks, postage stamps (from 1879 to 1894), and other engraved and printed materials.

The American Bank Note Company officially formed on April 29, 1858, following the Panic of 1857 when seven prominent security printers merged and established headquarters in New York City. Shortly thereafter, in less than two years, the remaining independent banknote printers merged to form the National Bank Note Company. This merger strengthened its position in the secure printing industry, setting the stage for a long history in high-security printing, which included producing U.S. postage stamps from 1861 to 1879 through two companies it later absorbed: the National Bank Note Company (1861-1873) and the Continental Banknote Company (1873-1879).
