Western States Oil Corporation, incorporated in Delaware in January 1923, was a product of a complex and rapid consolidation strategy orchestrated by Charles N. Haskell, a prominent oil entrepreneur and former governor of Oklahoma. Haskell’s interests specifically established the corporation to unify the management of vast, productive oil properties spread across Wyoming, California, and Montana, along with occasional interests in other western regions. Upon its formation, Western States Oil swiftly became an integral part of a massive, interconnected network of holding companies and subsidiaries, directly joining forces with the Middle States Oil Corporation and Southern States Oil Corporation.

Despite its ambitious regional goals and initial promise, the corporation’s independence and financial stability were short-lived. By the end of 1923, Haskell’s heavily leveraged empire began to crumble under severe financial pressure, attracting intense scrutiny from investors and regulators. The New York Curb market abruptly suspended trading of the sister company’s stock as the corporate network descended into insolvency. This downward spiral reached its peak in 1924 when Middle States Oil defaulted on its principal and interest payments. The ensuing fallout triggered a decades-long receivership and legal battle over the tangled assets, which was not conclusively resolved by the U.S. District Court until 1952.

A stock certificate is issued by businesses, usually companies. A stock is part of the permanent finance of a business. Normally, they are never repaid, and the investor can recover his/her money only by selling to another investor. Most stocks, or also called shares, earn dividends, at the business's discretion, depending on how well it has traded. A stockholder or shareholder is a part-owner of the business that issued the stock certificates.
