It ranks as the second-largest city in the state, following Charlotte, and is the tenth-largest city in the Southeastern United States. Additionally, it holds the 41st position in terms of population among U.S. cities and is the most populous city within the Research Triangle metropolitan area. Known as the "City of Oaks," Raleigh is characterized by numerous oak trees that adorn its streets. The city spans an area of 148.54 square miles (384.7 km²) and had a population of 467,665 according to the 2020 census, making it one of the fastest-growing cities in the nation. The Globalization and World Cities Research Network classifies Raleigh as a sufficiency-level world city. The city is named in honor of Sir Walter Raleigh, who was instrumental in the establishment of the now-defunct Roanoke Colony in what is now Dare County.
