Unissued Stock printed by Goes. Swarthmore is a borough located in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, United States. Initially, it was named "Westdale" in tribute to the esteemed painter Benjamin West, an early resident of the area. The name was later changed to "Swarthmore" following the founding of Swarthmore College. According to the 2010 census, the population of the borough was 6,194. Originally part of Springfield Township, the borough developed around Swarthmore College, which was established in 1864. The introduction of passenger rail service from Philadelphia in the 1880s significantly increased the appeal of the borough as a commuter suburb, leading to its incorporation in 1893. Approximately one-third of the borough's land area is occupied by the Swarthmore College campus. Many streets in the southern section of the town are named after eastern colleges, and a considerable portion of the housing stock dates from the Victorian era through the 1920s. The Ogden House and the birthplace of Benjamin West are both recognized on the National Register of Historic Places.
