This impressive Republic of Cuba 1,000 Peso Public Debt Bond was issued as part of the “Emisión de Bonos de la Deuda Pública de Cuba 1950–1980,” a long-term government financing program aimed at national development. The certificate boasts a 4% interest rate and specifies a maturity date of June 30, 1980, with a principal value of 1,000 pesos. Numbered 2095 in red, the bond is dated at Havana, March 12, 1952, and bears the authorization of the Banco Nacional de Cuba, acting as fiscal agent, along with an engraved or facsimile signature for the Cuban Minister of Finance. The lengthy Spanish-language text provides a comprehensive legal authority for the bond’s issuance, detailing interest payments, amortization provisions, and the obligations of the Republic of Cuba to its bondholders.

Visually, the bond stands as a remarkable example of mid-20th-century Latin American security engraving. A richly detailed green ornamental border encircles the document, while the upper center prominently displays the Cuban national coat of arms flanked by flags and decorative foliage. Large “1000” denomination medallions are positioned on either side, and the bold title “REPUBLICA DE CUBA” dominates the center. A prominent circular seal of the Ministerio de Hacienda – República de Cuba appears near the bottom, further enhancing its official character. Issued during a particularly tumultuous period in Cuban history—just two days after Fulgencio Batista seized power on March 10, 1952—this bond serves as both an attractive financial instrument and an evocative artifact from the final decade of the pre-Revolutionary Cuban Republic.

A bond is a document of title for a loan. Bonds are issued, not only by businesses, but also by national, state or city governments, or other public bodies, or sometimes by individuals. Bonds are a loan to the company or other body. They are normally repayable within a stated period of time. Bonds earn interest at a fixed rate, which must usually be paid by the undertaking regardless of its financial results. A bondholder is a creditor of the undertaking.
