$5, TN-2005, 480-2. Purdy, Tennessee is a rural unincorporated community 3.5 mi (5.6 km) northeast of Selmer in McNairy County, Tennessee. Until 1890, Purdy was the county seat of McNairy County. Failed development in the 1850s kept the community rural thereafter, without industries, major business ventures or tourism. Starting out as Purdys college in 1840, the school name was changed to Purdy University in 1859. The Battle of Shiloh during the Civil War almost totally destroyed the school. The Methodist Church reinvigorated it shortly after the war ended and maintain control until 1893. The town of Purdy is no more.
