Peerless Truck and Motor Corporation - $500 Automobile Bond

Peerless Truck and Motor Corporation was incorporated in Virginia in November 1915 as an automotive organization that brought together established passenger-car and commercial-vehicle operations. Based around its manufacturing facilities in Cleveland, Ohio, the company produced gasoline and electric trucks, passenger automobiles, and specialized vehicles. Its formation reflected the rapid expansion of the American motor industry, when manufacturers sought additional capital and broader product lines to meet the increasing demand for personal transportation and commercial hauling. The corporation was authorized with $20 million in capital stock and financed part of its development through convertible gold notes issued in 1915.

During World War I, Peerless devoted substantial manufacturing capacity to heavy trucks and military vehicle chassis, giving the company an important role in wartime transportation. After the conflict, declining government demand and the availability of surplus military trucks made the commercial-vehicle market increasingly difficult, prompting the company to concentrate more heavily on passenger automobiles. Peerless became known for carefully engineered, high-priced cars and continued introducing advanced designs throughout the 1920s. The Great Depression sharply reduced demand for luxury vehicles, however, and automobile production ended in the early 1930s, bringing the company’s period as an American motor-vehicle manufacturer to a close.
