Pixar Animation Studios, headquartered in Emeryville, California, is a globally recognized American animation studio renowned for its critically acclaimed and commercially successful computer-animated feature films. Since 2006, the studio has been a subsidiary of Walt Disney Studios, which is part of the Disney Entertainment division of the Walt Disney Company. Established in 1979 as a division of Lucasfilm’s computer division, initially known as the Graphics Group, Pixar transitioned to an independent entity in 1986, driven by substantial investment from Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple, who subsequently became its majority shareholder. In January 2006, Disney acquired Pixar for a valuation exceeding $7.4 billion, resulting in the conversion of each share of Pixar stock into 2.3 shares of Disney stock.

Pixar is widely recognized for its feature films, which benefit from the advanced technology of RenderMan, the studio’s proprietary version of the RenderMan Interface Specification image-rendering API. The iconic character representing the studio is Luxo Jr., a desk lamp that appears in its 1986 short film of the same title. As of October 2023, Pixar has produced 27 feature films, commencing with Toy Story (1995), the first fully computer-animated feature, and concluding with Elemental (2023). The studio has also created a diverse range of short films. By July 2023, Pixar’s feature films collectively generated over $15 billion at the global box office, averaging $546.9 million per film. Notable entries such as Toy Story 3 (2010), Finding Dory (2016), Incredibles 2 (2018), and Toy Story 4 (2019) each surpassed $1 billion in revenue and are ranked among the 50 highest-grossing films in history. Furthermore, 15 of Pixar’s films are featured in the top 50 highest-grossing animated films of all time. The studio has garnered 23 Academy Awards, 10 Golden Globe Awards, and 11 Grammy Awards, along with numerous other accolades and recognitions.

Since its inception in 2001, Pixar has produced eleven Academy Award-winning animated films. These films include Finding Nemo (2003), The Incredibles (2004), Ratatouille (2007), WALL-E (2008), Up (2009), Toy Story 3 (2010), Brave (2012), Inside Out (2015), Coco (2017), Toy Story 4 (2019), and Soul (2020). Notably, both Toy Story 3 and Up received nominations for the Academy Award for Best Picture. On February 10, 2009, Pixar executives John Lasseter, Brad Bird, Pete Docter, Andrew Stanton, and Lee Unkrich were honored with the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Film Festival, with the physical award presented to George Lucas, the founder of Lucasfilm.
