Brayton Ives (August 23, 1840 – October 22, 1914) held the position of president of the Northern Pacific Railway from 1893 to 1896 and was also the president of the New York Stock Exchange as well as the Western National Bank of New York. Additionally, he served as an officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Born in Farmington, Connecticut, on August 23, 1840, he was the son of William A. Ives and Julia (née Root). Ives graduated from Yale University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1861. During the American Civil War, he served as the assistant adjutant general on the staff of Brigadier General Orris S. Ferry and later became the Colonel of the 1st Connecticut Cavalry Regiment. For his bravery in the battles of Ream's Station, Deep Bottom, Five Forks, and Sailor's Creek, he was brevetted as a brigadier general. By 1868, Ives had established himself as a notable financier in New York, serving two terms as president of the New York Stock Exchange. He held the presidency of the Western National Bank of New York for many years and was appointed president of the Northern Pacific Railway on October 20, 1893. At the time of his passing, he was the president of several companies, including the Hecker-Jones-Jewell Milling Company, the Standard Milling Company, the Kanona & Prattsburg Railway Company, and the Northwestern Consolidated Milling Company.
