Mitchell Energy & Development Corporation stands as a prominent real estate developer in the Houston-Galveston region and ranks among the largest independent producers of natural gas and liquid hydrocarbons in the United States. Its most significant real estate venture is The Woodlands, a sprawling 25,000-acre community that is home to over 33,000 residents. In addition to its real estate endeavors, the company is engaged in the production of natural gas liquids, the operation of intrastate pipelines, and the exploration and extraction of natural gas and crude oil. In 1991, the company reported a production of 60.5 billion cubic feet of natural gas and approximately 18 million barrels of oil, condensate, and natural gas liquids.

The company was initially established as Roxoil Drilling by financier H. Merlyn Christie on February 5, 1946. Later that year, the name was changed to Oil Drilling, Incorporated, following the acquisition of a share by geologist George P. Mitchell. Mitchell, whose father was a Greek goatherd who immigrated to Arkansas, ultimately rose to the position of CEO and became the visionary leader of the company. His family adopted the surname Mitchell after a railroad timekeeper, unable to pronounce Savva Paraskivopoulis, chose to refer to his father as Mike Mitchell. Born in Galveston in 1919, the younger Mitchell financed his education at Texas A & M University, where he studied petroleum engineering. Despite his limited experience, he secured a position as a consulting geologist, earning a modest fee along with a percentage of any oil discovered.
