The Levis and Kennebec Railway Company, officially incorporated in 1869 by a special act of the Province of Quebec Legislature, was spearheaded by prominent local figures, including its president, Hon. Joseph-Godric Blanchet, and significant investor Louis-Napoléon Larochelle. The ambitious project aimed to establish a direct transportation corridor between Lévis, Quebec, and the Kennebec region of Maine. The original charter granted the company the authority to construct a wooden railway extending from the Notre-Dame ward in Lévis to the United States border in the Beauce County. Initially, the tracks were laid with timber, but the company retained the right to upgrade to iron rails as financing and technology permitted. By 1875, the line had expanded to include areas like Sainte-Marie de Beauce.
Despite its strategic promise to connect Canadian markets with a planned American route from Lexington, Maine, the company encountered substantial financial difficulties. Debates and public disputes arose regarding its management and funding structures, which severely limited its independent growth. The line eventually reached Vallée-Jonction in 1881, where it was absorbed into the expanding Quebec Central Railway network. Under Quebec Central control, the former infrastructure supported local lumber, mining, and passenger traffic for several decades before shifting entirely to regional operations. Today, portions of the historic right-of-way have been repurposed, and the landmark Lévis Railway Station stands as a National Historic Site of Canada.
A bond is a document of title for a loan. Bonds are issued, not only by businesses, but also by national, state or city governments, or other public bodies, or sometimes by individuals. Bonds are a loan to the company or other body. They are normally repayable within a stated period of time. Bonds earn interest at a fixed rate, which must usually be paid by the undertaking regardless of its financial results. A bondholder is a creditor of the undertaking.
