The Lehigh and Hudson River Railway (L&HR) was the smallest among the six railroads that were consolidated into Conrail in 1976. This railway served as a bridge line traversing northeast to southwest across northwestern New Jersey, linking the Poughkeepsie Bridge at Maybrook, New York, with Easton, Pennsylvania, where it connected with several other rail companies.

The Warwick Valley Railroad was established on March 8, 1860, as a branch of the New York and Erie Railroad, diverging from it at Greycourt and extending southwest to Warwick, New York. It commenced operations in 1862 under the management of the Erie. 

The Pequest and Wallkill Railroad received its charter by 1870 to construct an extension in New Jersey, running from Belvidere on the Delaware River and the Belvidere Delaware Railroad northeastward to the New York state line. Subsequently, the Lehigh and Hudson River Railroad was chartered as a competitor, intending to build a line from Belvidere to McAfee, with the Wawayanda Railroad completing the route to the state line. In April and May of 1881, the three companies merged to create a new Lehigh and Hudson River Railroad, and on April 1, 1882, the Warwick Valley Railroad was incorporated, resulting in the formation of the Lehigh and Hudson River Railway (L&HR).
