20 Lempiras, P-83. The lempira is the official currency of Honduras, subdivided into 100 centavos. It is named after Lempira, a 16th-century leader of the indigenous Lenca people, renowned for his resistance against the Spanish conquistadors. Lempira's legacy is commemorated on the 1 lempira banknote and the 20 and 50 centavos coins. The lempira became the official currency in 1931, replacing the peso at an equal value. In the late 1980s, the exchange rate was two lempiras to one U.S. dollar. As of April 4, 2022, the exchange rate is 24.40 HNL to US$1.
