The Gulf, Mobile and Ohio Railroad Company (GM&O), a prominent Class I railroad, successfully connected the Midwest with the Gulf Coast. Formed in 1940 through the merger of the Mobile and Ohio Railroad and the Gulf, Mobile and Northern Railroad, it was the brainchild of visionary railroad executive Isaac B. Tigrett. Headquartered in Mobile, Alabama, the GM&O expanded significantly through strategic acquisitions, particularly the 1947 purchase of the Alton Railroad, which extended its reach to Chicago and St. Louis. Renowned for its operational efficiency, the GM&O became the first major American railroad to completely replace its steam locomotives with diesel-electric power.
During its golden era in the mid-20th century, the GM&O was celebrated for its robust freight business and exceptional passenger service. Iconic diesel-powered passenger trains like the The Rebel and The Alton Limited offered luxurious, air-conditioned travel that redefined the standards of comfort in the regions they served. However, as the transportation industry shifted towards interstate highways and aviation in the 1960s, the GM&O sought a partner to ensure its financial stability. This led to the merger of the GM&O with the Illinois Central Railroad in August 1972, resulting in the formation of the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad. This merger effectively concluded the GM&O’s distinct corporate history while solidifying its legacy as a crucial artery of American commerce.
A stock certificate is issued by businesses, usually companies. A stock is part of the permanent finance of a business. Normally, they are never repaid, and the investor can recover his/her money only by selling to another investor. Most stocks, or also called shares, earn dividends, at the business's discretion, depending on how well it has traded. A stockholder or shareholder is a part-owner of the business that issued the stock certificates.
