Inv# FM3798   Foreign Paper Money
Country: Germany
Years: ND(1940/1945)

2 Reichsmark, P-R137a. Front and back shown. The Reichsmark served as the official currency of Germany from 1924 until the collapse of Nazi Germany in 1945, and it remained in use in the American, British, and French occupied zones until June 20, 1948. Subsequently, the Reichsmark was replaced by the Deutsche Mark, which became the currency of West Germany and later unified Germany following the reunification in 1990. In the Soviet occupation zone, the Reichsmark continued to circulate until June 23, 1948, when it was succeeded by the East German mark. The Reichsmark was divided into 100 Reichspfennig (Rpf or ???). The term "Mark" originates from an ancient Germanic weight measurement, traditionally equivalent to half a pound, and was later associated with various coins; "Reich," meaning realm, derives from the official designation of the German state from 1871 to 1945, known as Deutsches Reich.
