The Gates Learjet Corporation revolutionized private aviation by transforming military technology into the gold standard for business travel. Founded in the early 1960s by inventor William Powell Lear Sr. as the Lear Jet Corporation, the company repurposed the design of a prototype Swiss ground-attack fighter into a sleek, high-speed corporate jet. The legendary Learjet Model 23 made its first flight in 1963 and quickly captured the market’s attention with its exceptional performance, climbs, and fighter-like aesthetics.
In 1967, Lear sold his majority stake to the Gates Rubber Company, a Denver-based industrial firm led by Charles Gates Jr. This acquisition led to the official formation of the Gates Learjet Corporation in 1969, merging Lear’s radical engineering vision with the financial stability and manufacturing expertise of a major corporation.
Under Gates’ stewardship, the corporation expanded its lineup and solidified the Learjet name as a global symbol of wealth, speed, and executive luxury. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Gates Learjet introduced highly successful models like the Learjet 24, 25, and the turbofan-powered 35 and 36 series, which offered significantly improved range and fuel efficiency. The company also pioneered aerodynamic advancements, including the implementation of winglets on the Learjet 28 to reduce drag and enhance performance.
Despite economic downturns and shifting markets that eventually led to the company’s acquisition by Bombardier in 1990, the Gates Learjet era remains the defining chapter that established the modern business jet industry and permanently transformed corporate operations globally.
Stock and Bond Specimens are made and usually retained by a printer as a record of the contract with a client, generally with manuscript contract notes such as the quantity printed. Specimens are sometimes produced for use by the printing company's sales team as examples of the firm’s products. These are usually marked "Specimen" and have no serial numbers.
