The Four Wheel Drive Auto Company, commonly known as Four Wheel Drive (FWD), was a trailblazing American company that specialized in the development and production of all-wheel drive vehicles. It was established in 1909 in Clintonville, Wisconsin, initially named the Badger Four-Wheel Drive Auto Company, by founders Otto Zachow and William Besserdich. The company's first production facility, designed by architect Wallace W. DeLong from Appleton, Wisconsin, was constructed in 1911.
In 2003, FWD Corporation, along with its affiliated companies—Seagrave, Baker Aerialscope, and Almonte Fire Trucks—was sold to an investment group led by James Hebe, a former executive at American LaFrance. Currently, the Seagrave Fire Apparatus group stands as a flagship entity under ELB Capital Management.
Zachow and Besserdich developed their first successful four-wheel drive (4x4) vehicle, known as the "Battleship," in 1908. This achievement led to the creation of the company. The word "Badger" was dropped from the company name in 1910. Their innovative, patented full-time four-wheel drive system featured a lockable center differential and double-Y constant velocity universal joints for steering. In modern terms, the "Battleship" would be classified as an all-wheel drive vehicle, as all FWD products included full-time four-wheel drive with a lockable center differential. A stock certificate is issued by businesses, usually companies. A stock is part of the permanent finance of a business. Normally, they are never repaid, and the investor can recover his/her money only by selling to another investor. Most stocks, or also called shares, earn dividends, at the business's discretion, depending on how well it has traded. A stockholder or shareholder is a part-owner of the business that issued the stock certificates.
