Grenville Mellen Dodge (April 12, 1831 – January 3, 1916) was a Union Army general, civil engineer, and a key figure in the construction of the First Transcontinental Railroad. Born in Danvers, Massachusetts, Dodge earned an engineering degree from Norwich University in Vermont. He later moved west to Iowa and worked as a railroad surveyor.

When the American Civil War erupted in 1861, Dodge enlisted in the Union Army as a colonel in the 4th Iowa Volunteer Infantry. He fought in the Battle of Pea Ridge and later served as an intelligence chief for General Ulysses S. Grant during the Vicksburg Campaign. Promoted to major general, Dodge commanded the XVI Corps during the Atlanta Campaign before resigning from the army in 1866.

Following his military service, Dodge became the chief engineer for the Union Pacific Railroad. He played a crucial role in planning and constructing the nation’s first transcontinental rail line, which was completed in 1869. During this time, he also served as a U.S. Congressman representing Iowa from 1867 to 1869. Later in life, Dodge consulted on significant railway projects worldwide and led an investigation into the Spanish-American War. Dodge passed away in Council Bluffs, Iowa, in 1916, leaving behind a legacy as a master builder of the American West.

The Denver, Texas and Fort Worth Railroad Company, established in 1887, played a crucial role in the development of the “Gulf-to-Rockies” rail network. It merged with predecessor lines like the Denver, Texas and Gulf, and operated alongside the Fort Worth and Denver City Railway. The company’s objective was to create a direct and profitable connection between the agricultural and cattle centers of North Texas and the mineral-rich markets of Colorado. This ambitious expansion was officially completed on March 14, 1888, when construction crews from both directions connected the tracks at Union Park, near Folsom, New Mexico. This monumental link established the first major rail line to reach Northwest Texas, leading to regional migration, the rise of boomtowns like Amarillo, and a transformation of the local economy by introducing commercial cotton farming and ending the era of long and arduous cattle drives.

Despite its initial success, the Denver, Texas and Fort Worth Railroad faced challenges due to the volatile corporate landscape influenced by national economic shifts. Later in 1888, the company acquired controlling stock in its Texas counterpart and was subsequently consolidated into the massive Union Pacific, Denver and Gulf Railway Company in 1890. This extensive network proved unstable and collapsed into receivership during the severe financial Panic of 1893. After a corporate reorganization in the late 1890s, these interconnected lines were eventually absorbed into the Colorado and Southern Railway, which itself became a vital subsidiary of the sprawling Burlington Route system by 1908. Although the specific name of the Denver, Texas and Fort Worth Railroad faded into corporate history, its integrated tracks continued to serve as a critical economic artery for freight and iconic passenger trains like the Texas Zephyr for nearly a century.

A stock certificate is issued by businesses, usually companies. A stock is part of the permanent finance of a business. Normally, they are never repaid, and the investor can recover his/her money only by selling to another investor. Most stocks, or also called shares, earn dividends, at the business's discretion, depending on how well it has traded. A stockholder or shareholder is a part-owner of the business that issued the stock certificates.
