Sidney Dillon (May 7, 1812 – June 9, 1892) was a prominent American railroad executive and financier who rose from humble beginnings to become one of the leading railroad builders in the United States. Born in Fulton, New York, to a farming family, Dillon entered the rail industry as a young water boy on the Mohawk and Hudson Railroad, one of the nation’s earliest rail lines. By 1840, he had established his own construction company and secured a significant contract for the Boston and Albany Railroad. His sharp business acumen and relentless drive propelled him through the ranks of the rapidly expanding American transit network, solidifying his position as a key contractor for major East Coast lines.

Dillon’s defining legacy emerged through his substantial investment and active involvement with the Union Pacific Railroad, beginning in 1865. He played a crucial role in constructing the First Transcontinental Railroad and was present at Promontory Summit, Utah, for the historic driving of the Golden Spike in 1869. Dillon later served two terms as the president of Union Pacific (1874–1884 and 1890–1892) and held the position of director for the Western Union Telegraph Company. While his legacy faced scrutiny due to his association with the Crédit Mobilier of America scandal, his monumental impact on American infrastructure remains permanently commemorated by towns named in his honor, including Dillon, Montana, and Sidney, Nebraska.
