Delta Air Lines, originally established in 1924 as Huff Daland Dusters, began as a small crop-dusting operation in Macon, Georgia. Its primary objective was to combat the devastating boll weevil infestation that was wreaking havoc on cotton crops. In 1928, the company’s principal founder, C.E. Woolman, acquired it and renamed it Delta Air Service. This name was a nod to the Mississippi Delta region that the airline served.

On June 17, 1929, Delta officially entered the passenger transportation business. Its inaugural flight departed from Dallas, Texas, and made stops in Louisiana before reaching Jackson, Mississippi. By 1941, Delta had relocated its headquarters to Atlanta, Georgia. This move established the foundational hub that would eventually become the world’s busiest airport and the heart of Delta’s global network.

Throughout the late 20th and early 21st centuries, Delta solidified its position as a global aviation powerhouse. This was achieved through strategic acquisitions, technological innovation, and network expansion. In 1955, Delta pioneered the hub-and-spoke system, which revolutionized industry safety and service standards. The airline also significantly expanded its footprint by acquiring Chicago and Southern Air Lines in 1953, Northeast Airlines in 1972, and Western Airlines in 1987.

Despite facing a turbulent industry-wide financial crisis and emerging from Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2007, Delta executed a historic merger with Northwest Airlines in 2008. This landmark integration created a truly global carrier, positioning Delta as one of the world’s largest, most profitable, and most decorated commercial airlines today.
