Cunard White Star Limited, a prominent British shipping company, was established on May 10, 1934. This was a strategic move to prevent the economic collapse of two fierce ocean liner rivals during the Great Depression. Both the Cunard Line and the White Star Line were severely affected by the economic downturn and sought financial assistance from the British government. The government agreed to provide a crucial £9.5 million loan, contingent upon the merger of the two competitors. This funding proved instrumental in completing the construction of the legendary RMS Queen Mary and later, the RMS Queen Elizabeth. Within the combined fleet of 25 vessels, a unique operational harmony was maintained: Cunard-built ships displayed the Cunard flag, while White Star vessels displayed the White Star flag.

Given Cunard’s dominant 62% controlling stake and better financial standing, it gradually absorbed or retired White Star’s assets. Renowned White Star vessels such as the RMS Olympic and RMS Majestic were swiftly retired or sold for scrap to streamline operations. During World War II, the company’s remaining transatlantic liners played a vital role as troopships, significantly contributing to the Allied war effort. After the war, the partnership formally concluded when the Cunard Steamship Company acquired the remaining 38% share capital of White Star in 1947. By January 1, 1950, the company officially dropped the “White Star” name and reverted entirely to the Cunard Line, marking the end of a significant chapter in maritime history.
