The County of Lawrence 1887 dated Dakota Territory Bond is a rare financial artifact that provides a unique glimpse into the late 19th-century gold rush era of the Black Hills. Established by the Dakota Territorial Legislature in January 1875, Lawrence County was formally organized in April 1877 after a treaty with the Sioux Nation that ceded the mineral-rich Black Hills region. Named in honor of its first county treasurer, “Colonel” John Lawrence, the county rapidly transformed into the economic powerhouse of the region. By the time this bond was issued in 1887, the county capital of Deadwood and the nearby town of Lead were experiencing unprecedented wealth from the Black Hills Gold Rush. This rapid municipal and industrial growth necessitated substantial infrastructure investments, which local governments financed by issuing municipal bonds.

These 1887 bonds were issued during a pivotal transitional period, just two years before the Dakota Territory was split and admitted to the Union as North and South Dakota on November 2, 1889. Featuring classic, intricate 19th-century vignettes of mountain ranges, mining camps, and bustling pioneer towns, these documents encapsulate the rugged, industrial optimism of early South Dakota. Today, they are highly sought-after scripophily collectibles. They bear the historical stamps and hole-punch cancellations typical of redeemed frontier debt, serving as a tangible record of the capital that laid the foundation for modern Lawrence County, South Dakota.

A bond is a document of title for a loan. Bonds are issued, not only by businesses, but also by national, state or city governments, or other public bodies, or sometimes by individuals. Bonds are a loan to the company or other body. They are normally repayable within a stated period of time. Bonds earn interest at a fixed rate, which must usually be paid by the undertaking regardless of its financial results. A bondholder is a creditor of the undertaking.
