The Caterpillar Tractor Co. traces its origins back to the late 19th century when Benjamin Holt and Daniel Best independently developed early steam tractors for agricultural use. However, in the challenging terrain of California’s San Joaquin Valley, heavy steam tractors often sank and became stuck in the soft, boggy soil. To address this issue, Benjamin Holt made a groundbreaking innovation in 1904 by replacing the rear wheels of a Holt steam tractor with wooden tracks bolted to chains. This ingenious design resulted in the creation of the first commercially successful track-type tractor. A photographer observed the machine’s crawling motion, which inspired Holt to trademark the name “Caterpillar.” During World War I, Holt’s track-type tractors revolutionized military logistics by efficiently hauling heavy artillery across muddy battlefields. This demonstrated the immense utility of the design on a global scale.

Facing intense post-war competition and financial challenges, the Holt Manufacturing Company and the C. L. Best Tractor Co. decided to merge in 1925, forming the Caterpillar Tractor Co. The newly established entity consolidated its manufacturing operations and streamlined its product line. It transitioned from gasoline engines to pioneering the use of diesel engines in earthmoving equipment during the 1930s. This technological advancement significantly enhanced power and efficiency, solidifying the company’s dominant position in the construction and infrastructure industries. Over the ensuing decades, Caterpillar expanded its global reach, supplying the massive machinery required for historic infrastructure projects such as the U.S. Interstate Highway System. Consequently, the company evolved into the multinational heavy equipment giant that we recognize today simply as Cat.

A stock certificate is issued by businesses, usually companies. A stock is part of the permanent finance of a business. Normally, they are never repaid, and the investor can recover his/her money only by selling to another investor. Most stocks, or also called shares, earn dividends, at the business's discretion, depending on how well it has traded. A stockholder or shareholder is a part-owner of the business that issued the stock certificates.
