Caterpillar Inc., widely recognized as CAT, is an American corporation that specializes in the production of construction, mining, and various engineering equipment. It holds the distinction of being the largest manufacturer of construction equipment globally. In 2018, Caterpillar was positioned 73rd on the Fortune 500 list and 265th on the Global Fortune 500 list, with its stock being a part of the Dow Jones Industrial Average. The company originated in 1925 from the merger of the Holt Manufacturing Company and the C. L. Best Tractor Company, leading to the establishment of the Caterpillar Tractor Company in California.
In 1986, it restructured as a Delaware corporation, adopting its current name, Caterpillar Inc. In 2017, Caterpillar announced its decision to relocate its headquarters from Peoria, Illinois, to Deerfield, Illinois, ultimately scrapping plans for a new $800 million headquarters in Peoria. By 2022, the headquarters was moved to Irving, Texas. In addition to manufacturing machinery, Caterpillar has been licensing and marketing a variety of clothing, work boots, and the Cat phone brand of durable mobile devices and smartphones since 2012. The company's products are easily recognized by their distinctive "Caterpillar Yellow" color and the "CAT" logo.
