The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, designated by the reporting mark BO, holds the distinction of being the first common carrier railroad in the United States and is recognized as the oldest railroad in the nation, with its inaugural section commencing operations in 1830. Merchants from Baltimore, who had previously benefited from the National Road, aimed to establish trade connections with settlers traversing the Appalachian Mountains. The B&O encountered competition from various existing and proposed transportation routes, including the Albany-Schenectady Turnpike, constructed in 1797, the Erie Canal, which opened in 1825, and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. Initially, the B&O operated solely within Maryland, with its original line extending from the port of Baltimore to Sandy Hook, Maryland, which was inaugurated in 1834. At Sandy Hook, the railroad linked with Harper's Ferry—initially by boat and subsequently via the Wager Bridge over the Potomac River into Virginia—thereby facilitating access to the navigable Shenandoah River. The B&O Railroad also gained notable recognition as one of the four railroads featured in the original version of the widely popular board game Monopoly. It is unique among the railroads in the game as it did not directly serve Atlantic City, New Jersey, whose street names were utilized in the game's original edition.

A stock certificate is issued by businesses, usually companies. A stock is part of the permanent finance of a business. Normally, they are never repaid, and the investor can recover his/her money only by selling to another investor. Most stocks, or also called shares, earn dividends, at the business's discretion, depending on how well it has traded. A stockholder or shareholder is a part-owner of the business that issued the stock certificates.
