Uncut Sheet of 4 checks. Boston, Massachusetts. The South Shore Railroad was a Massachusetts railroad company incorporated in 1846 to connect Quincy and Duxbury, passing through Hingham, Cohasset, Scituate, and Marshfield. The initial 11.5-mile segment from Braintree to Cohasset began operations on January 1, 1849. However, the extension of the line from Cohasset to Duxbury, spanning 17.5 miles, was not completed until 1871 by a new entity, the Duxbury and Cohasset Railroad. This extension connected to the South Duxbury and Kingston area, linking with the 1844 Old Colony Railroad line to Plymouth. Caleb Stetson, a prominent shoe manufacturer from Braintree, was one of the early promoters and presidents of the South Shore Railroad.
