In December 1784, Comme Simons, whose name also appears as Cummy and Comma in court documents, obtained a judgment against James Shop concerning several debts owed to him. Simons was a Black freeman residing in Woodbury, while Shop was a Black freeman from New Haven. At first glance, this case seems to be a typical debt dispute; however, a closer analysis of the verdict reveals more complexity.
