The American Revolutionary War (1775–1783), also known as the Revolutionary War and the American War of Independence, was a conflict initiated by the thirteen American colonies against Great Britain. The war arose mainly due to grievances over Britain's taxation policies and the lack of colonial representation in Parliament. Although the colonies had enjoyed a high degree of self-governance since their founding in the 1600s, the British government's efforts to have them contribute to the costs of their own defense—after the expensive French and Indian War (1754–1763) and the Seven Years' War (1756–1763)—sparked significant resistance.

Colonial discontent grew with the introduction of the Stamp Act and Townshend Acts, leading to events like the 1770 Boston Massacre and the 1773 Boston Tea Party. In response to the Boston Tea Party, Parliament imposed the Intolerable Acts on Massachusetts, prompting twelve colonies to convene the First Continental Congress. There, they drafted a Petition to the King and organized a boycott of British goods, setting the stage for the Revolutionary War.
