He was recognized for his willingness to invest in areas that others considered too far from the established business centers, like Anaheim Hills and San Clemente. Beyond his development work, John Lusk was a notable philanthropist. He established an orphanage in Mexico, donated $4 million to create the Lusk Center for Real Estate Development at the University of Southern California, and supported various California Y.M.C.A.'s. In the early 1990s, during a downturn in the real estate market, Lusk stepped down as CEO of the company, citing the need for restructuring. He remained as chairman until his death in 1999.
