Washington Gas Light Company - 100 Pieces!
State(s): District Of Columbia
Virginia
Company History: Washington Gas Light Co. was incorporated by an act of Congress in 1848 to supply gas to the entire city of Washington, DC and the vicinity. Long blocks of similar flat-fronted, two story rowhouses housed the workers for the company in the now popular Foggy Bottom Historic District of DC. The population of Foggy Bottom consisted primarily of poor immigrants of German and Irish descent. Washington Gas Light continued to expand its core business and to restructure itself to be more competitive. In 1996 it completed a process to streamline management and began a pilot program authorized by the Maryland Public Service Commission allowing 6,600 customers in Maryland to choose from among five competing companies, including Washington Gas, to be their supplier. It is also interesting to note that in the vignette of the stock certificate is an early version of the Washington Monument.

Today, WGL Holdings, the parent company of Washington Gas Light, provides natural gas services to metropolitan Washington, DC and adjoining areas in Maryland and Virginia to 960,000 customers. In addition, WGL Holdings owns a group of growing energy-related retail businesses that are focused primarily on energy marketing and commercial heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) services.
