John Jacob Astor (1763-1848), Fur Trader, Capitalist. Immigrated to America in 1784 and on his trip met a fellow immigrant who had successfully traded for furs with the Indians. He entered this lucrative business and by 1800 he had amassed a fortune of $250,000. Then made large purchases of NY City real estate. In 1834 he sold all his fur interests and retired to the administration of his twenty-million dollar fortune!!! In 1835 this stock transfer of the Utica and Schenectady RR Company, NY was issued to him but not signed. Fresh and Mint! Rare! From the Syracuse University Collection.
