William G. Fargo (1818-1881), Expressman, First co-owner of Wells & Co., Secretary of American Express (1850), and later President of American Express, etc. John Butterfield (1801-1869), Expressman, financier. Active in stage lines, steamboat operation and railroad promotion, organizer of the American Express Co. 1850. In 1857, he and associates undertook the first transcontinental state line and Butterfield as President of the Overland Mail Co. planned and established the service. 1865 stock of the American Express Company. This is the "Capital Stock 60,000 Shares" blue overprint of "10,000 Shares". This Butterfield/Fargo signature combination is 100 times rarer than the Wells/Fargo signed stocks. Butterfield signs as Vice President. This rare uncanceled example has great margins and is in excellent condition.
