Howard Johnson Co. - 100 Pieces!
State(s): Maryland
Company History: Howard Deering Johnson was a struggling businessman in 1925 when, using his mother’s recipe, he produced a rich, high butterfat content ice cream. After a slow start, customers flocked to his stands along the Massachusetts shore, and he added new flavors until he had the now-familiar “28 flavors”. His fame and fortune was realized with the development of the roadside restaurant. The large Colonial home style, popular in New England, became the model for his shop. The white building, multi-paned windows, three dormers, cupola with a clock on front and its brilliant orange roof became a distinctive landmark for good food. The Simple Simon and the Pieman logo, created in the 1930s by artist Joseph Alcott, was used on the weathervane atop the cupola, and on signs, menus, and the china patterns.

The success of Howard Johnson was in the consistency of its food and ice cream. The company pioneered the concept of processing and pre-portioning food in a central commissary. By the late 1930s, the restaurants stretched the entire length of the Eastern seaboard, from Maine to Florida. Howard Johnson’s expanded with the development of interstate roads as the restaurants were located on toll roads and right off exits. In 1980 the company was sold to the Imperial Group.
