General Foods Corp - 100 Pieces!
State(s): Delaware
Years: 1960's-70's
Company History: The history of General Foods began with the merging of many companies with deep roots in Colonial America, such as the Walter Baker plant near Boston, which had made chocolate since 1765. C.W. Post marketed cereals since 1895, the first being Postum and then Post Grape Nuts two years later. The origin of Maxwell House coffee dates back to the 1890’s, Minute Tapioca to 1894, Jell-O gelatin and Baker’s Coconut to 1897. In 1925 General Foods was incorporated.

The growth of this multi-product company began in 1929, when the Postum Company acquired controlling interest in all of Clarence Birdseye’s frozen food business. The Birdseye division of General Foods pioneered in the quick-frozen foods industry. During a fishing expedition to Labrador, Mr. Birdseye realized that fish retained the “fresh caught taste” when frozen in temperatures reaching 40-50 degrees below zero. In 1923 he developed and built equipment for carrying out this method, including a continuous belt freezer. In 1929, the Birdseye rights, patents and operations were sold to the newly formed General Foods.

General Foods continued to acquire small food producing companies, and today it is one of the world’s largest processors and marketers of packaged grocery and meat products, and has major operating subsidiaries worldwide.
